Overall, collaboration to me can be a negative and a positive depending on the circumstance. Collaboration can be a con because of the barrier between individuals. Students tend to be uncomfortable with people who they are unfamiliar with and don’t talk to at all. This sometimes creates an awkward barrier between everyone, where no ideas can be shared through the group. Also, working together means to everyone’s ideas must be either incorporated into the topic, or else controversy can lead to people disliking each other because they don’t take in account someone’s ideas. Lastly, I believe collaboration can be a nuisance at times, when people to chime in and cooperate with the group and play their role. Group work requires trust with each other and if you are unfamiliar with the people around you, it is difficult to gauge the amount of work people can put inside a project. Collaboration can be a pro in many cases, it divides the work evenly, so being overwhelmed in the shouldn’t be an issue. Also, it can be beneficial for you because of the assistance that can be provided with each other, such as helping each other with phrasing, ideas, and even making them talk. Collaboration is helpful and needed in the scientific research, so it is a good learning curve.
Working under a deadline can be stressful at most. It can stress you out because of the amount of time given to complete a project to make it the best it can possibly be. There are bound to be mistakes somewhere or confusion, so it can play a big role in completion of assignments. For instance, during class there was so much chaos because we didn’t know when the contents of the project was due. Although, having deadlines can also help with a project because of procrastination, if there is a due date, there is in a way an incentive to do it right away instead of waiting. It forces people to share ideas and work together because of how time restricted we are.
Taking the leap to do an in-class publication felt slightly different from usual group work. This assignment felt as if we were publishing a newspaper as a class, rather than doing individual groups ad having 3+ ideas. The way I visualized the group project was mainly, everyone does their own part inside their own sections, then we discuss and share overall. The project in class was chaotic overall because we are the first class to do it. We had trouble choosing which topics to do and who will complete it, which delayed the process. The class publication gave us an introduction of what and how collaboration will work in the future if we were to pursue a job or write in general. It forced us to get out of our comfort zone and cooperate with new people, which we will have to do in the future for our careers. Although, I was a bit skeptical at first, it turned out to be a learning experience. I believe that doing the in-class publication was a good alternative rather than just writing an essay.
Through this project, I met new people and got to know my classmate’s personality and even their writing styles. Some classmates have their different way of formulating their ideas whether if it was a simplistic or creative way. Everyone had their own unique style of doing things. Although, I got to know and talk to the people, it was only for a brief moment. In the class discussion, I generally tried giving ideas about the specific content we should put them in, and how to categorize it in. I suggested the ideas of what pictures we can include, what the title can be, and which content best suites our classes’ motto. We typically communicated mostly in class, but we did message each other occasionally through messages or through email. For my partner, Rokia, we send our review and opinion about Alex back and forth via email, to write all our ideas do. We both had fun doing this assignment, we made jokes and had conversation about the assignment and school stuff. It helped me get to know a classmate which I never thought I would be friends with. We texted and send documents, although I was sometimes late to respond. Overall, it was a good experience working with Rokia, I got to know her on a personal level.
We didn’t have any trouble communicating: I believe we got along well, we weren’t silent and we were both engaging. I tried editing the best of my ability and tried to correct some grammatical mistakes of my peers or help include ideas and add more information in contents. I also did look at second drafts that is being included inside the contents like the guest speakers. I mainly focused on the guest speaker portion because of how entertained and drawn into Alex. I did assist in other contents too; My peers worked on the mottos, peer reviews, lost words, trips, motto etc.
In science, art does belong in it. The reason behind is all the diagrams and pictures that are given and explain what a diagram is art. Art gives a representation of what everything looks like. Although art isn’t directly influenced or based in science, there are correlations between the two, in terms of drawing figures out such as proteins and DNA structures.
